The Beach

We decided to head down to the beach this morning. Once we got there we realised that there was a section of the beach entirely devoted to the guests of our hotel. The beach area was furnished with comfortable sun loungers with thick cushions. And to keep us hydrated the hotel’s beach bar was situated only a few metres away. Strolling along the slatted wooden walkway between the rows of loungers, we found a group of three vacant loungers. Minutes later we were soaking up the warm Mediterranean sun, against a backdrop of waves gently breaking on the beach. In many ways, it is an idyllic setting.

After an hour of warming ourselves in the sun, I decided to paddle along the beach to the small pier that we had walked past the previous day. The water was cold on our overly warm feet. And the crushed shells mixed into the sand ensured that there would be no hard skin left on our feet once we had finished paddling. So you could say this was part of our health routine!

As we walked back past our lounger towards the Lyttos Beach Hotel it suddenly became a lot busier. There were lots of young families building sandcastles and enjoying all the fun of the beach. We’ve subsequently discovered that the Lyttos Beach Hotel situated next door to us is the family resort, and our hotel only welcomes children over 12.

By now the sand had heated up to gas mark 5 under the warm Mediterranean sun and roasted the bottom of our feet as we commuted to the beach bar for rounds of Coke Zero, peach iced tea and a cappuccino.

The morning drifted past, and all too soon it was lunch time. Returning to the main restaurant we partook in another gorgeous lunch. The ladies were delighted to discover a large joint of roast beef on offer, cooked just the way they like it. Liz commented that it was one of the best lunches she’s had on our breaks.

After lunch, we walked back along the little path by the beach to a mini market to look for some biscuits for Matty. He’d had them in Athens and wondered if we could bring some back for him. Returning to the hotel we mirrored yesterday afternoon and relaxed on a sunny lounger by the pool bar. To the rear of the pool bar, we found two sunken seating areas. At first, we thought they were pool seats, for those who were swimming. That assumption was completely wrong. The seats were dry and allowed you to enjoy your drinks with a worm’s-eye view over the pool area.

One or two raindrops began to interrupt our afternoon’s contemplation, but it was short-lived and disappeared as fast as they had arrived. But that didn’t stop our English reasoning from moving us off the loungers into the covered pool bar seats. Once there I selected a Zombie cocktail which was very tasty.

We’d planned ahead yesterday and booked our evening meal at Wok & Chopsticks (see pic below), which we were all looking forward to.

The self-service buffet looked beautiful and didn’t disappoint. I’m not a huge sushi fan, because I’ve learned that not all sushi is equal. And it’s hard to find good sushi, especially in an all-inclusive hotel. We’ve seen it a few times, in various hotels on the “Oriental night” menu. But this was the first time I’ve tried it in a hotel setting. It was a good choice. The sushi not only looked amazing, but it tasted good too. The rice wasn’t too sticky and each of the fillings had a very delicate but distinctive taste. The Edamame beans and Wakame greens were delightful along with the pickled ginger, Wasabi mayonnaise and crushed Wasabi. I opted for baked crab, sushi, prawn and salmon sushi, and thinly carved salmon flakes.

When I returned to the table. As I sat down, the ladies looked at me inquiringly, and then down at my plate of sushi. It’s common for me to return to our table with a selection of desserts and say something like “let’s all try these desserts”. As I sat, I casually said,” I’ve got some sushi for us to try “. And in unison they both said “no!” Here’s my sushi.

The main course buffet was wonderful. A good selection of freshly cooked and well-seasoned dishes. The ladies were excitedly tucking into the buffet by the time I’d returned with my sushi.

After overindulging on the main course items, we opted for a little fruit for dessert. I couldn’t resist adding one of their mini Pavlovas to my mango, watermelon, kiwi and dragon fruit. We’re only two days into our break and I can tell you already dear reader, we are really going to find it difficult next week when we’re back home. We’ll miss the fantastic selection of food in the restaurants. And we’ll miss having the wide range of drinks available. My little teapot sat in the corner of my home office is going to seem very basic compared to all this decadence.

Although we spent the majority of the day in the hotel resort, it’s been very relaxing and to my surprise, I haven’t felt bored.
